Strain on the 1st structural ply is a relevant quantity to assess the reliability of the optimum model as the materials found on the Aerogenesis blade have a maximum fibre strain of approximately 2200 micro strain [11]. The authors carefully inspected the optimum models and observed that the resulting maximum strain values were not an accurate representation of the highest strains experienced by the blade due to the applied load. The results presented in the above table were derive from FEA of the optimum models and are representative of the highest strains experienced by the model that are not due to geometrical discontinuities.
